  • Give me your delinquents, your former bankrupts, yearning to borrow...
By Steve Cocheo. There are only so many good credits to go around. Faced with continuing heavy competition for auto loans and residential mortgage loans, banks have begun reaching further down into the credit markets for "B" and "C" and sometimes even "D" loans, also known as "subprime" loans. The trend reflects one of the hotter ideas to come along in banking in recent years, but at least one recent report raises troubling questions about the prospects for significant losses. Also: what exactly are "B" and "C" credits? A practictitioner offers a glossary of terms.

  • Taking brokerage to a higher level
By Penny Lunt. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. After four years of offering mostly select mutual funds and annuities to their customers, many banks are entering a new phase, full-service brokerage, in which they sell every product a consumer might see in a wire house. More and more banks are realizing that a logical way to become more like a broker is team up with one, and the feeling is mutual.
